Training Camps prepare 2012 USA Team Members for the World Championships

The USA Wildwater Senior Team Training, Coaching and Development Program organized two training camps this year. The first between Xmas and New Years was at NOC in North Carolina and the second in mid-April in Seattle. I think I speak for all the team members who've been able to participate, that both of these camps and the coaching and support in-between has been invaluable for feeling well-prepared for the upcoming World Championships in France. Many thanks to Chris Norbury, Tom Wier, Andrew McEwan, and Chris Hipgrave for giving of their time and experience to help all of us.

The Pacific Northwest camp last weekend was 4-days. We started on Green lake in Seattle (calm, warm conditions!) with video analysis and time trials in the morning, and then did a fartlek “cruise” down Lake Washington to the home of a local wildwater paddler to feast and party. For the rest of the camp, the focus was on being smooth and learning lines on whitewater, using several of the many runs within an hour of town that had the best flows that weekend. Gold star goes to Emmy Truckenmiller for doing video everyday and running shuttle so we had immediate feedback every day and plenty of time to get whitewater runs in. We did 2 sessions of sprints on the Cedar at high flows (like Bourg!) and then even bigger whitewater stuff on the Green River for classic practice. We ended the final day with loops on the harder section of the Green we did the day before (even more like Bourg!). I've heard the eastern US is rather dry so the Pacific Northwest was definitely the place to be as we had plenty of water in the rivers and even sunshine! Thanks to Tom Wier for hosting a bar-b-que and lodging on Saturday night.

Of course, we were also lucky in North Carolina this winter as it didn't snow. In fact, we had some very nice weather days and we also had group housing so we could practice training and living together (just like Bourg!) - thanks, Chris Hipgrave for arranging that! NOC is a great location with access to flatwater, long classic stretches to do more of those dreadful, I mean fun, fartleks, easy whitewater for attaining on the Nantahala, and a good spot on the Tuckaseegee to do loops.

NOC camp paddlers: Chris Hipgrave, Chris Norbury, Terry Smith, Jennie Goldberg, Tierney O'Sullivan, Jeremy Dicasalo, and Kurt Smithgall.

Seattle camp paddlers: Andrew McEwan, Jennie Goldberg, Tom Wier, Chris Norbury, Doug Ritchie and Marin Millar.
