Animal Upper Gauley Race (September 26th)

Donnie Hudspeth
Race Organizer

August 15, 2005 -- Hico, WV

The Animal Upper Gauley Race is coming soon! Plan now to come out and have a great time with us!

and now, here is your Gauley River WV access update....

Well, we are still in the "mystery zone" (squirt boaters will like that) as far as Private Boater access for the Gauley Season and the race. Yes, this is a mess! The Gauley Race though is "thumbs up" and we will be ready to race on September 26th! We DO have permission to be at Sweets, but not to takeout at this time. We are continuing to work behind the scenes to make something happen, and are optimistic it will change! For us here, this has been so frustrating to observe- and that is almost all we can do except- We do know it is important to call and or email WV representatives to let them know YOUR thoughts. Additionally, it is very important to respect the rights of the land owners, and appreciate that we have been allowed access for so long. But- this is a totally unacceptable situation for you and me- private boaters. Or for that matter, ANY user- bird watcher, hiker, biker, fisherman, kayaker, race spectator, etc. This is a National Park Recreation Area, and we want access to it. If you are from out of state- then your support is equally as valid- these representatives need to hear from you.

Contact these WV Representatives and ask them to help find a solution to this access issue! Both short term and long term. Private paddlers love coming to this area and paddling the Gauley River, but without any access- many may not come. The Gauley River is a National Park Recreation Area and important to the local economy. (Contact information is below...)

** There is a grass roots effort to reopen the old right of way, river right below Woods Ferry. Info can be found at
