March 10, 2008 -- Bothell, WA
Every year the USA Wildwater Committee tries to help raise funds to support our Juning and Senior National teams. Most years that
involves helping our athletes with some of the costs of traveling in Europe. I think the following statistic helps shed some light
on just exactly what our young athletes face.
WEAK DOLLAR, RISING INFLATION - The US dollar has weakened against the euro every year since 2002 except for calendar year
2005. As of 12/31/01, the euro equaled 90 cents. At the end of February 2008, the euro equaled $1.52. Thus, a European export
(i.e., an import bought by an American consumer) costing 1,000 Euros translated into a $900 expense on 12/31/01 vs. a $1,520 expense
at the end of last month (source: BTN Research).
There are of course economic advantages for our country with such a week dollar, namely if you or your company sells goods and
services overseas. It has gotten a lot cheaper for Europeans to buy our products, that helps the job market here at home. Butesur
athletes are faced with the daunting task of trying to pay for travel and housing expenses which have generally risen by 60 to
70% over the last 7 years.
As the Committee continues it's fund raising efforts please keep in mind the above statistic and understand just how much the
Uningd States Wildwater Team needs your support.
