A great weekend of racing

March 31 and April 1, 2007 -- Almond, NC

Thanks to the Nantahala Racing Club, we had another well-executed wildwater race on the Nantahala River, bringing together 20 athletes, many of who were vying for positions on the 2007 Junior World Championships Team. A special thanks to all the volunteers that made this race happen, plus those athletes and parents that made the long trek to the mountains of North Carolina.

The first day of the race was a sprint through Patton’s Run rapid, a fun class 3 stretch with good chop, waves, rocks and plenty of entertainment. The short sprint meant that you count on going 110% the whole way. Pacing was not an option and it showed in the grimaces on the athlete’s faces.

Day two was the classic featuring a short punchy section of the river. The 11 minute course was short, which also meant you needed to hammer the whole way. It featured the classic Appalachian whitewater of Quarry, Root Canal and Whirlpool rapid’s.

A huge thank you goes out to Sandra Hyslop and her mum, Jackie, for coming to race with us all the way from England. Sandra schooled all of us which her great fitness, technique and modesty. We look forward to seeing you again at Junior World Championships.
