February 27, 2006
-- Seattle, WA
The first wildwater race of the 2006 season in the Pacific Northwest is MARCH 11, 2006
Here's the details for race #1 and #2 and #3 of the Downriver NW Cup Series - brought to you by the
Washington Kayak Club, USACK and the League of Northwest Whitewater Racers. (For information about the
slalom event, see
www.nwwhitewater.org)
There will be 3 races:
* Sprint through the slalom course - class II+/III- (2 runs)
* Classic from Landsburg to Dorre Don - about 35 min., class II+/III-
* Classic from Maple Valley to Cedar Grove Rd. - 3.5 miles, class II
Practice runs for the expert course will be on Friday at 4:00 pm and Saturday at 9:00 am. You must
paddle one of these practice runs in order to compete in the classic from Landsburg to Dorre Don.
We'll also paddle the lower run on both or either practice run, if there's interest. Contact Jennie
at theleague@nwwhitewater.org
if you'll be joining us.
The Saturday Downriver Competitors meeting will be 11:00 am at the Slalom site.
* The Sprint Race will start at 12:00pm
* The Classic Race will start at 3:00 pm.
* And the classic race on the lower section will follow immediately after upper section racers arrive
at Maple valley.
The sprint and the Maple Valley classic are open to anyone. However, for safety reasons, if you wish
to race in the Classic from Landsburg to Dorre Don, you must have paddled the course with the group
either Friday night or Saturday morning in order to qualify. There's just enough wood in the river to
qualify this run for expert paddlers only. Also - if the flow is lower than 900 cfs, the river will
likely be blocked and this race section will need to be cancelled. The lower run should be good
regardless. The City is working with us and have said that they should be able to make sure we have
at least 500 cfs, which works for the lower section, and that if it rains a lot, that they will hold
flows to not exceed 1500 cfs.
