News from the Wildwater Committee

The Wildwater Committee (WWC) met on November 3rd. The agenda included an update on the 2016 Wildwater Senior Team Trials (see above), 2016 Wildwater Junior Team Trials, 2016 Wildwater National Championships and the election of members of the WWC for 2016/2017. Click here to view the minutes of the meeting.

The 2016 USA Wildwater Nationals were awarded to the Penobscot River Whitewater Nationals Regatta in Old Town, Maine. The Regatta will now be featuring ACA-sanctioned downriver Nationals for open canoes and kayaks (and possibly SUPs) and USACK-sanctioned Wildwater nationals. More information can be found at penobscotriverwhitewaternationalsregatta.com.

The 2016 Wildwater Junior Team Trials will be held in two locations. The Eastern trials will be held in conjunction with the US Open on The Nantahala River in western NC during the last weekend March. The Western trials will be held on the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs, CO. The tentative date is the 3rd weekend in April.

The WWC also reviewed and approved the new Bylaws of the Wildwater Committee of the USA Canoe/Kayak (USACK) organization. The bylaws will be effective on January 1, 2016. Click here to view the new document.

2015 USA Wildwater Rankings

The current 2015 U.S. Wildwater Rankings are available on USAWildwater.com. The last page of the file includes a description of the methodology that was used to calculate the rankings. The second column in the 2015 Wildwater Calendar contains an asterisk for each event for which I have results. I will update the rankings for the remaining races as soon as I receive the results. Contact me via email if you have any questions or see any mistakes in the data.

On a Personal Note

My involvement in USA Wildwater started shortly after the April, 2004 team trials that were held on the Gauley river near Craigsville, WV. Donnie Hudspeth was the race orgainzer and I agreed to help him. After the event, Chris Hipgrave asked me if I would be interested in serving as the webmaster for USACK Wildwater. I saw the comaraderie and support among the athletes and felt that I could offer my time and computer skills to the group. Sometimes it hard to believe that was almost 12 years ago.

I have given notice to the Wildwater Committee that I am not willing to serve on the WWC for the 2016/2017 term. I will continue doing my job until the election and my replacement takes over my duties.

One important change is that I will not be sending individual emails to those on the subscription list for e-Zines. I will create the e-Zines and put them on the website. I will also post a notice on the USA Wildwater Yahoo Group and the USA Wildwater Facebook page. The notice will include a link to the newsletter. Those who want to receive notification about new e-Zines will have to subscribe to the Yahoo group or Facebook page.

Perhaps my replacement will resume the email distribution. That decision is up to him/her and the new Wildwater Committee.
