Dear Wildwater Racers and Friends:

Welcome to the first USA Wildwater newsletter of 2012. I hope that you are well and busy training for some fantastic wildwater events this year.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea for information about races and events for this year. You can view our calendar at If your favorite race is not listed, send me an enmail with the information and I'll add it to the calendar.

First on the calendar is a training camp by Maurizio Tognacci on February 18-19 in the Nantahala area. This is the weekend before the annual Glacier Breaker race (also on the Nantahala). Maurizio will be conducting a second training camp on March 3-4 in the Atlanta area.

For those in the Pacific Northwest, check out the schedule for the 2012 Northwest Downriver Cup Races. Their firsrt race is scheduled for March 17.

The Junior Team Trials will kick off with the Eastern Team Trials on March 24-25 on the Nantahala, followed by the Western Team Trials on April 20-22 on the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs, CO. These events will determine which juniors will represent the U.S. in international competition this year. (The senior athletes on the 2012 U.S. Wildwater Team were selected at the Team Trials held last fall on the Russell Fork River.)

Plans are progressing for The U.S. National Wildwater Championships which will be held in Jackson, Wyoming on May 25-27, in conjunction with the 2012 Wyoming Whitewater Championships and Festival. It's shaping up to be a stellar weekend. Watch for more about the Nationals in early March.

I have also included a link to the minutes of the Wildwater Committee meeting that was held on January 22nd. One of the main items that we discussed was the 2012 Wildwater budget. Anyone who wishes to help us provide for the USA Wildwater Team (and/or coaching, training camps, and development) can make a (tax deductible) donation to USA Wildwater through our national governing body USA Canoe/Kayak. Go to our website link at to make a donation online or by check. (Make sure you designate your donation for Wildwater.)

Finally, I included some news from Bob Bofinger, a long time wildwater athlete.

Best wishes for an awesome 2012.
