School trips to France when I was 11 progressed to slalom as a pretext for getting my parents to drive me to whitewater venues. In Britain slalom is a summer discipline and wildwater a winter one, and I arrived at university at the end of the slalom season and was met by a bunch of wildwater fanatics who put me in a boat to join their training sessions.
